What is Dry Cell Battery?

How Do Dry Cell Batteries Work?


Dry cells generate electricity by converting chemical energy into electricity. Typically, zinc and carbon or zinc and manganese dioxide are placed in an electrolyte paste inside the battery, and they react with each other through a chemical process in which the electrolyte (carbon or manganese dioxide) reacts with zinc to generate electricity.

A common dry battery is the carbon-zinc battery, which uses what is sometimes called a Leclanché battery. The battery consists of an outer zinc container that acts as an anode. The cathode is a central carbon rod surrounded by a mixture of carbon and manganese (IV) dioxide (MnO2). The electrolyte is an ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) paste. A fabric of fabric separates the two electrodes, and a brass needle in the center of the battery conducts the current to an external circuit.
